Is it possible to get spyware or viruses from external drive?

You may get spyware or viruses from the external drive if I haven 't opened it yet? What if I just plug it open and I did not drive yet, but the drive is on, it is possible to get virus spyware / him?

   For thought dont there are you use autorun are you using esata usb device misrepresented itself ie thumb drive tells the computer that the wild yet.
