What is the most reliable & inexpensive anti-virus/anti-spyware programs out there?

Deeper Tempest asked:

I am looking for anti-virus & anti-spyware programs that are super efficient but don’t sap your wallet or bank account of your dough. Please, NO fraud sofware. I know there are people who false advertise crappy software.

    Anti-virus: AVG free.grisoft.com
    Anti-spyware:
prevention: Spyware Guard, Spyware Blaster, hosts file
cleaning; Spybot, Ad-Aware, Yahoo! Antispy, Spyware Terminator.

I’ve used this combination of free software for clients for the past year with great success.

P.S. Webroot Spysweeper sucks. Yes, it’s gotten PC Mag Editor’s Choice, but 1 month after install, it slows your computer down. No joke.

P.S. Norton Anti-Virus slows your computer down 58% according to independent tests.

I’ve been a Norton customer for years. As for price — I look for ads and specials in our weekly paper — Office Max, Office Depot, Computer City, CompUSA, Best Buy — I caught a one-day special for Norton 2007 3-license for $9.99. Can’t beat that.

I totally love the free SpyBot Search & Destroy, which you can get FREE from

But I also use ad-aware. You see, you can use a combination of anti-spyware sweep programs to ensure that you got everything that might bring you harm.

I good firewall can help to prevent an active spyware program from sending your private information to someone on-line.

    Good luck and Happy Computing!
